Fighting With Words
The boys had a great time at Fighting with words on Thursday. They put all of their great ideas together to make a terrific story called 'Harry's Big Fear'.
The story is about Harry the Fishfinger and his best friend Super Egg. Harry's dream is to become a Gaelic football player, lets hope the evil fork referee doesn't put a stop to Harry's dream!
You will have to read one of the boy's books to find out what happens to Harry:)

Autumn Poems
The class wrote lovely Autumn poems in class today.
Here are a few of them for you to enjoy. Well done boys!
Autumn
Apples are falling from the trees,
The trees are losing there leaves,
The trees are losing there branches,
The roots have stopped growing,
The barks are falling off.
By Jake
Autumn
All the trees,
Underneath, the leaves,
The trees are
Big Big Big,
All the leaves are blowing,
The leaves on the tree are falling down,
The trees are falling down...Oh No!
By Justin
Autumn
Apples fall,
Under the tree,
The leaves are falling,
Under the trees squirrels run.
My ma will take nuts home,
Nothing was there any more.

Helen Keller
This week the class learned a little bit about the life of Helen Keller. Helen was both blind and deaf so with the help of her teacher she learned a unique way of communicating. By tracing the letters of words on her hand Helen was able to understand what her teacher was saying to her and in turn she was able to communicate with others. The boys had fun communicating with each other in this way!

Fighting Words
On May 10th 2nd Class were lucky enough to attend the Fighting Words workshop where they wrote their own story and had an artist paint illustrations for it. They called their story The Drop-Kicking Monkey and it can be seen on the Fighting Words website - www.fightingwords.ie.
The Drop-Kicking Monkey
Once upon a time there was a man called Stewie and he ate too many pizzas.
One day, Stewie turned into a flying pizza. “Oh NO!” he said, “What’s happening to me on this very good day?”
Stewie’s dog Banjo tried to eat him. He shouted, “STOP Banjo!” and he flew up onto the table.
His wife, Lisa, saw him and decided to cook him an arm out of chips.
Stewie’s best friend, Orange the annoying monkey, kicked the door down and jumped into Stewie’s house. He shouted, “Stop eating my friend!”
Orange thought Lisa was going to eat Stewie.
“But I was only cooking arms for him,” Lisa told him.
Orange took Stewie out of the house and brought him to the doctor. The doctor told Stewie that he would be all right but that he needed to find 10,000 chocolate burgers to turn back into a human.
“I must warn you”, said the doctor. “The Crazy-Burger Superhero has all of the chocolate burgers and he won’t share them with anyone as he loves them too much.”

The story was continued by each boy in the class - ask nicely and they might read them to you!

2nd Class Nature Walk
With the weather improving every day we thought it might be a good time to have a nature walk and see what signs of spring we could spot. The boys brought a checklist and looked for things like buds, new leaves, daffodils, insects, nests and flowers. The nature walk was in Fairview Park and the boys played in the playground and on the hills aftertheir work was done!

'How I Became A Knight' by Shane Fitzgerald
Shane wrote this brilliant piece recently about an interesting way to become a knight. It's very imaginative and well written, in fact it could have been written by a much older boy - well done Shane!!!
I worked for King Arthur as a stable boy. It was great. When all the knights were competing at one competition and I was tossing a bale of hay down to a horse the White Knight walked in and the bale of hay landed on him knocking him out. I knew if the White Knight didn't beat the Black Knight King Arthur would lose his castle so I put on the White Knight's armour and went out and beat the Black Knight. That's how I became a knight!
Floating and sinking
We investigated floating and sinking in 2nd class today. We tested a number of items including coins, spoons, parers and rulers. Some boys were surprised to find that the heavier items didn't always sink. It was also interesting to see what happened to an orange before and after it was peeled - we thought that because the orange would be lighter with the peel removed it would float however this wasn't the case. This is because the peel is less dense than the orange so it allows the orange to float when it is on but the orange sinks without it - like a life jacket!

2nd class learn about Andy Warhol
2nd Class are back from their Christmas holidays refreshed and ready for work!! Last week we learned about an artist called Andy Warhol and then created our own Warhol-inspired portraits. The boys really liked this artist, especially his use of colour and the subjects of his paintings. Their favourite painting by far was of Muhammad Ali, the famous boxer. Here are some of the Warhol paintings we looked at as well as photos of the boys working on their own portraits. These are finished and will be displayed in the classroom soon - photos of that to follow!
